MAAP has spent more than a decade developing their approach to the design of buildings for people with mental illness. In January 1999 MAAP was featured prominently in the RIBA Symposium "Therapeutic Environments for Mental Health" in which a number of their completed buildings and design philosophy were selected for presentation.
We are award winning designers in the field of mental health architecture. Our aim is to create an environment that is:
• Protective: with an emphasis on individual and group safety and security, dealing with people who are vulnerable, at risk from self harm as well as others whilst allowing flexible separation of different patient/client groups.
• Homely: providing opportunities for privacy as well as social contact, indoor and out in order to facilitate self-development.
• Therapeutic: in a structured and supportive setting. The challenge for designers is to reconcile the essential safety and security measures within a domestic setting, without resorting to bland or superficial architectural references.
